The Ventura Botanical Gardens (VBG) is a young garden that celebrates plants from the five Mediterranean climate regions of the world.
Our botanical collections under conservation include many threatened and endangered species that require specialized care.
VBG is also an expanding garden having a master plan for 107 acres, 40 acres of which have been developed.
This position will manage the care of the collection and ensure horticultural standards and best practices of care and maintenance.
This position will manage the horticulture/landscaping staff including training, scheduling, tracking tasks, and evaluating performance.
Duties include:
Management of garden team:
Leadership of garden staff including garden assistants, student interns, seasonal workers, and volunteers.
Evaluates and oversees the performance and development of direct reports.
Prioritize, assign and track status of tasks.
Manage staff schedules and time sheets.
Assist with staff review process and disciplinary measures.
Assist with development of policies and SOPs.
Work with senior staff on budget development for operations.
Ensure and organize training for safety awareness and horticulture techniques and principles.
Fosters teamwork and mentors staff members by modeling best practices alongside them.
Management of general operations:
Planting, irrigation, IPM, landscaping, equipment/infrastructure maintenance, fertilizer application, maintaining and ordering supplies.
Other duties:
Contribute to planning and reporting.
Contribute to aesthetic decisions regarding collections.
Coordinate with planning and collections to meet goals related to horticulture.
Assist with coordinating contractors and interaction with City Parks Department.
Coordinate with Welcome Center and Event staff.
Assist with generating content for reports.
Participate in professional development.
Requirements:
*Management experience of at least 5 years and work experience in landscaping, horticulture or agriculture.
*
University degree in relevant field.
Experience developing and managing annual budgets.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to establish systems and organize workflows.
Commitment to the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The ability to lift up to 50 pounds independently.
Must be able to work with appropriate equipment and hand tools.
Ability to stand and work on feet for an extended period of time.
Desired:
Advanced degree in Horticulture or Agriculture.
Experience with Microsoft Office computer programs.
Knowledge of project management practices.

Pay: $65,000.
