Job Summary The Medical Assistant plays a key role in delivering both administrative support and performing clinical duties such as assisting in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a provider.
Most shifts are 9 am – 9 pm and we are open 7 days per week.
Major Duties & Responsibilities Medical Assistant • Patient Care • Rooms and interviews patients to understand current medical issue as well as medical history; and takes vital signs (e.
g.
pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height, and measurements) • Preps patients for examination and treatment, and assists during procedures including the positioning of all instruments and equipment • Sets up and assists physician with all procedures such as, but not limited to: O2 saturation levels, minor surgery, casting, pelvic exams, nebulizer treatments, skin tag, mole removals, etc • Performs Venipunctures, EKG, Blood draws, spirometry, vision/hearing checks and ear irrigation as needed • Performs Sub-Q, IM, and Intradermal injections of authorized medication as ordered by the provider and following routine standing orders • Accurately calls in prescriptions as needed • Performs routine laboratory tests, QC and sending samples to labs • Maintains accurate and complete records by updating the patients’ medical chart • Through genuine and positive communication, makes each patient (and their family as appropriate) feel informed, understood, and special while delivering care with urgency • Clinic Support • Prepares exam and treatment rooms • Cleans and sterilizes instruments and room per guidelines • Keys data into EMR/forms to maintain accurate office and patient records • Chart auditing, CPT, and ICD-9 review • Cleans and packages instruments for autoclaving and operates the autoclave • Performs accurate quality control and patient sample testing for waived tests • Works collaboratively with regional Lab assistant to maintain all lab equipment and testing kits per manufacturer guidelines • Supports the clinical team by maintaining quality controls for in house laboratory testing • Supports Provider with the EMR and Lab workflow • Works collaboratively with the clinical team to maintain the inventory of all supplies, medication, and equipment necessary for the operation of the clinic • Maintains reference lab binder to ensure all specimens result in a timely manner • Any other tasks to support daily clinical operations • Administrative/Other • Works in both front and back office to operate clinic cleanly, safely and efficiently (including hallways, bathrooms and lobby) • Follows proper channels of policies & procedures, communication & work standards • Organizes tasks to facilitate smooth work/patient flow • Schedules and registers patients • Schedules patient for referrals to specialists • Cleans as per company guidelines • Faxes and files forms; answer telephones; receives packages • Adheres to all company policies, business conduct and compliance standards • Communicates effectively in a professional manner with clients, staff, and providers • Any other task reasonably requested by company to meet its goals Area Medical Assistant (3 clinics) • Medical Assistant duties and responsibilities as described above • Will be required to travel and work at 3 clinics which is agreed upon during hire or approved by Regional Operating Director during a formal transfer to an open position in another clinic.
Although Center Managers will try to provide Medical Assistants with as much notice possible of any travel changes, same-day travel requests may be made for urgent business needs.
Job Related Skills/Competencies • Effective use of computerized patient care system • Knowledge of medical terminology • Knowledge of all safety requirements when handling biohazardous specimens or contaminated instruments • Knowledge of symptomatology of common and/or life-threatening medical problems and identifying abnormal laboratory values • Knowledge of MSDS and emergency treatments • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, ancillary departments, physicians and co-workers in a courteous and compassionate manner • Strong verbal skills to effectively convey sensitive information in a courteous manner in person or on the telephone; effective written communication and computer skills for proper charting • Ability to work well under pressure and be quick on your feet • Has a contagious and positive work ethic; models our core values • An effective team player who contributes valuable ideas and feedback and can be counted on to meet commitments Education/Qualifications • High school diploma • Current Medical Assistant certification in the State of California or certificate as follows: o Documentation of completing of a medical assistant program from a medical assistant school that is accredited by ASSCS, ACCET, CAAHEP or ABHES or o Documentation of national certification for medical assistant issued by CMA, NCCT or AMT or o Documentation of completing a medical assistant program and demonstrated completion of no less than 10 clock hours of training in administering injections and performing skin tests; 10 hours of training in venipuncture and skin puncture for the purpose of withdrawing blood; at least 10 of each intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections and 10 skin tests, and/or at least 10 venipuncture and 10 skin punctures; 10 hours of training in administering medical by inhalation • Current Medi-Waste Training for: Bloodborne Pathogens for Healthcare, GHS Hazcom, HIPAA, HITECH & Omnibus • Current BLS certification Physical Requirements/Working Conditions • Must maintain a clean, healthful and professional appearance at all times and adhere to our uniform guidelines • Center Based: Requires working in a clinical setting.
The noise level is moderate and there is a potential for exposure to infectious diseases and blood-borne pathogens as well as erratic/unpredictable patient behavior • The ability to stand and sit for 5 hours at a time, (with some bending and stooping); ability to use manual dexterity in relation to clinical requirements; use hands to finger, key, handle, reach; some bending, kneeling and stooping; ability to bend; and ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to be punctual and maintain satisfactory attendance record • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
Ability to work overtime should business need arise.
• This job requires access to confidential and sensitive information, requiring ongoing discretion and secure information management • Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and ability to adjust and focus • Must be able to hear and speak effectively in English
