Title: Director of Marketing & Communications FLSA Status: Exempt Revision Date: December 2021 Department: MarComm Reports to: Chief Executive Office General Summary: The Director MarComm is responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining the council’s image and brand.
They take a leadership role in creating, implementing and managing strategies for public relations, communications, media, and marketing campaigns promoting Girl Scouts to internal and external audiences, using all forms of media available to increase girl and adult membership and gain financial and community support.
Develops and implements marketing initiatives to generate leads for both adult volunteers and girl members.
Job Requirements: • Supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive council marketing, public relations and communications strategy and plan.
• Establishes and cultivates relationships with local and mainstream media representatives throughout the council jurisdiction.
• Responds to inquiries from news media and provides guidance on responding to requests for information about the council; supports the council’s designated/lead spokesperson as necessary and appropriate.
• Aggressively seeks media opportunities to support the recruitment of girls and adults, promote Girl Scout programs, and attract new funding sources.
• Develops and implements marketing initiatives integrated with overarching marketing campaigns in Salesforce to generate leads for both adult volunteers and girl members using a variety of venues (paid and in-kind television advertising, radio advertising, print advertising, digital, web, social media, email email marketing and direct mail).
• Proactively researches stories, collects testimonials, writes press releases and pitches feature articles that enhance the Girl Scout image and brand and provide increased visibility to the council.
• Contributes to the design and development of compelling communications and marketing materials and coordinates their production, including but not limited to council newsletters, publications and print materials.
• Drafts speeches and designs presentations for senior leadership and council project leaders as assigned.
• Analyzes market trends, gathers customer insights and recommends changes to communications and marketing plans based on analysis and feedback.
• Develops and maintains a working partnership with volunteers that encourages the exchange of public relations and marketing opportunities, capitalizes on local knowledge and positively promotes Girl Scouts.
Provides support and resources that are readily available to assist efforts.
• Works collaboratively with all functional areas of the council to develop media campaigns, communications pieces and messages that support and achieve the council’s membership, fund development and other goals.
• Collaborates with the Digital/Web/Digital/Web/Social Media Marketing Manager to ensure comprehensive interactive and social-media coverage, web and Salesforce integration.
• Maintains budget for advertising and collateral development; tracks and measures initiatives and campaigns and creates management reports.
• Monitors campaign and marketing analytics; routinely reports/contributes to KPI dashboard.
• Active participation in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws: o Supervises department staff by providing training, support, communication, guidance and direction, as well as, recognizing achievements, evaluating performance of staff, addressing complaints, resolving problems and instituting disciplinary actions.
o Provides direction that results in maximized productivity and excellent customer service.
• Provides leadership and support for department and organization as directed: o Develops department training materials.
o Serves as project manager for department projects.
o Identifies opportunities to create positive customer experiences.
o Responds to all inquiries in a high quality, customer friendly and efficient manner that will yield overall customer satisfaction and ensure a professional image of the organization.
• Contributes to the overall success of the organization o Supports the achievement of the goals and objectives outlined in the council plan of work.
o Supports the organization’s commitment to diversity of girls, volunteers and staff.
• Professional autonomy to expand on the job duties and responsibilities hired to successfully perform job duties while utilizing a high level of independent judgment and discretion required to complete the necessary job duties • Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree required.
• Five years marketing communications and public relations experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with proven ability to pitch story ideas to editors and producers.
• PR web distribution experience required.
• Excellent computer skills required - Microsoft Word, Adobe Creative Suite, content management system, email marketing platform • Salesforce Marketing Cloud experience a plus.
• Proficiency with MS Word; InDesign a plus; knowledge of press release distribution services.
• A self-starter who can work independently with minimal oversight and take initiative; is flexible, adaptable, self-managed, organized, and has a strong attention to detail.
• Has demonstrated knowledge of the basic principles of marketing (for example, market identification and segmentation, interpretation and use of market data).
• Attracts support for the Girl Scout program, its key messages, and products, by promoting visibility and credibility of Girl Scouts in the community and to girls; identifies, seeks to understand, and influences the local market for Girl Scouting, effectively.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
